On the Cutting Edge - Setting an Industry Standard
Once again, Thos. S. Byrne, Ltd. set a new standard of performance as the general contractor for the DFW Consolidated Rent A Car Facility. With airport space at an expensive premium, DFW Airport responded to the challenge with a solution that changed the future of the industry by contracting with Byrne to construct a consolidated facility at a distance from the terminal buildings. On March 26, 2000, the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport introduced an extraordinary, efficient way to rent a car with the opening of the Consolidated Rent-A-Car Facility. Descriptively named, this $125 million facility has combined eleven rental car companies at a common location on a 200-acre site at the south end of the airport property. This facility houses all of the rental car operations including pick-up and drop-off, staging and storage, and quick turn around facilities such as light maintenance, fueling and car wash areas. A single, common bus system has replaced the individual rental car company buses that transport passengers from the airport to the rental car facility. The shuttle bus drops customers off at a retail-oriented, common-use lobby within the building, and the passengers then proceed to the individual rental car company's retail counter.

Complexity and Scope
The facility consists of: A two-story, 130,000 square foot common building; A two-story, 1.5 million square foot parking garage with capacity for more than 5,000 cars surrounding the common building on three sides; A 16,200 square foot bus maintenance facility with six maintenance bays, and above-ground fuel storage tanks for 30,000 gallons of fuel; individual service sites for the participating car rental companies; improvements to existing roadways, utility infrastructure and new roadways.

High Finish, Unique Design and Bold Architecture
The common building's unique design and bold architectural style creates a strong identity for the car rental operations and reflects the airport's original award-winning terminal design. A serpentine structure of concrete with a precast facade and generous use of a two-story window wall system in the front of the building provides for a dramatic view of the interior building lobby. The lobby floor is a geometric pattern of approximately 60,000 square feet of multi-colored terrazzo featuring unobstructed circulation to all of the rental car suites. Interior white metal column covers, coffered ceilings and generous lighting enhance each rental car agency's operations. Within the lobby, there is a larger-than-life Texas Cattle Drive sculpture symbolic of the legendary cattle trails that passed through Fort Worth and Dallas. The metal canopies on the common building and on the top level of the parking garage provide cover for vehicles and presents a bold, clean, 21st century appearance. As a result of Byrne's outstanding performance as general contractor, Byrne is once again the recipient of prestigious national and local industry recognition and awards.
